Boston Red Sox' Kutter Crawford Makes History as Early-Season Dominance Continues
Boston Red Sox' starting pitcher Kutter Crawford didn't factor into the decision on Monday morning when the Red Sox faced the Cleveland Guardians, but he did factor into the history books.
Crawford went 5.2 innings in the start, surrendering just two hits. He walked none and struck out six in lowering his season ERA to 0.42.
Per JP Long (@SoxNotes) on social media:
Kutter Crawford is the only pitcher in Red Sox history (excluding openers) to allow 1 or fewer runs and 3 or fewer hits in each of their first 4 starts of a season.
The Red Sox entered the season with all kinds of questions in the starting rotation, and that's only been heightened after injuries to Lucas Giolito and Nick Pivetta, but thus far Crawford has answered the bell at every turn.
The 28-year-old is in his fourth Major League season, all with the Red Sox, and looks poised to deliver by far his best season yet. He went 6-8 a season ago with a 4.04 ERA.
Because of the Red Sox' inability to hit consistently or play consistent defense, Krawford doesn't have any decisions yet this season.
At the time of this posting, the Red Sox trail the Guardians, 5-0, in the ninth inning. Assume they fall, they be 9-8 on the year heading into Game 2 of the series with Cleveland.
That game is Tuesday night with first pitch at 7:10 p.m. ET. Tanner Bibee (1-0, 5.93 ERA) goes for Cleveland against Garrett Whitlock (1-0, 1.26 ERA) for Boston.
