Boston Red Sox Notes: Brayan Bello Likely to Start Monday vs. Shohei Ohtani, Trevor Story Throwing
Before the Boston Red Sox opened up a four-game series with the Los Angeles Angels on Friday night, they got some good news on the injury front.
It appears that 23-year-old starting pitcher Brayan Bello will be set to make his season debut on Monday morning against the Angels. That game will be part of the "Marathon Monday" festivities and "Patriots Day." The game will be played at 11:10 a.m. and Bello appears set to be opposed by Shohei Ohtani on the mound.
Bello has been on the shelf all season with an elbow issue suffered early in spring training. In his most recent rehab start for AAA Worcester, he was brilliant, tossing 50 strikes out of 81 pitches in the outing.
Bello is among the most exciting young pitchers in the Red Sox system and will pair with Garrett Whitlock, Chris Sale, Nick Pivetta and Corey Kluber in the starting rotation.
He made his major league debut a season ago, going 2-8 with a 4.71 ERA. He made 11 starts in 13 appearances for the Red Sox.
As part of the "Patriots Day" festivities, the Red Sox are expecting to welcome back at least 20 members of the 2013 championship team. This is the 10-year anniversary of that World Series team and the 10-year anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombings.
In other good news, shortstop Trevor Story has started throwing again. He underwent elbow surgery this offseason and is likely out until at least the all-star break.
The Red Sox entered play on Friday night at 5-8 overall and eight games back of the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East.
