Former New York Mets Infielder, Tampa Bay Rays Reliever Reportedly Being Targeted By Boston Red Sox
According to Chris Cotillo of MassLive, the Boston Red Sox are interested in free agent infielder Amed Rosario and free agent reliever Robert Stephenson.
Rosario came up with the New York Mets but has also played for the Cleveland Guardians and Los Angeles Dodgers.
Stephenson has spent his career with the Cincinnati Reds, Colorado Rockies, Pittsburgh Pirates and Rays.
Per Cotillo:
Two other free agents the Red Sox have poked around on, per sources, are reliever Robert Stephenson and infielder Amed Rosario. A pursuit of Stephenson, who shined in the Rays bullpen this year, would make sense if the team were to trade a reliever like Kenley Jansen, Chris Martin or John Schreiber. Rosario is a candidate for second base.
The Red Sox have a need for a short-term replacement at second base. While Trevor Story is slated to reclaim shortstop full-time in 2024, the team is waiting for top prospect Marcelo Mayer to be ready to come up. That could be in 2024, so there's no need in having a long-term signing there.
The 28-year-old Rosario is a lifetime .272 hitter over seven years in the big leagues. He's popped 60 career home runs and has stolen 96 career bases. He played for the Mets for four years and then was traded to Cleveland in the Francisco Lindor deal.
Stephenson split 2023 with the Pirates and Rays and put together a great stretch in Tampa Bay. In 42 games for the Rays, he went 3-1 with a 2.35 ERA.
Lifetime, he's 17-20 with a 4.64 ERA. His best year was 2019, which saw him make 57 appearances for the Reds and go 3-2.
