The Tampa Bay Rays got a scary moment on Thursday afternoon against the Boston Red Sox, as starting pitcher Jeffrey Springs was removed in the top of the fourth inning with an apparent arm injury.

After throwing an 0-1 pitch to Red Sox DH Justin Turner, Springs grimaced and began flexing his arm and hand. He was removed from the game by Rays manager Kevin Cash and replaced by lefty Garrett Cleavinger.

The Rays are off to a great start this season, sitting at 12-0 entering Thursday's game, but they have dealt with injuries to starting rotation. Tyler Glasnow is already out and free agent acquisition Zach Eflin is on the injured list as well.

Springs has been excellent this season for Tampa Bay. He's 2-0 with a 0.56 ERA in 16 innings. He had allowed one run through three innings on Thursday before leaving.

For his career, he's 21-10 in 138 career games, posting a 3.40 ERA. He made his major league debut in 2018 with the Texas Rangers and spent part of 2020 with the Boston Red Sox before going to Tampa for the last three years.

As for Cleavinger, the 28-year-old is in his fourth major league season. He's spent time with the Phillies, Dodgers and Rays. He has a career 3-5 record with a 3.30 ERA.

At the time of this posting, the Rays and Red Sox are tied 1-1 in the top of the fourth.

There will be updates throughout the day on the condition of Springs.
