Chicago White Sox' Eloy Jimenez Victim of Strike Three Call After Timeout Not Granted By Umpire
Chicago White Sox outfielder Eloy Jimenez was victimized by not being granted a timeout by the home plate umpire on Sunday afternoon and instead took a called strike three.
Hitting against Cardinals lefty Steven Matz, Jimenez tried to call timeout late and stepped out, only to not have the timeout given. Matz threw the pitch anyways, which was over the plate and ruled strike three.
Jimenez wasn't happy about it and had words for the umpire after the fact. You can see the whole sequence below:
For this writer's money, Jimenez has no complaint here. He called timeout late and the umpire is under no obligation to grant timeout in those circumstances. It's an injury risk to Matz if he is forced to stop his motion, which it looks like he had already started.
At the time of this posting, the White Sox trail the Cardinals, 2-1, in the bottom of the sixth inning. Jimenez is 0-for-2. He's hitting .275 this season with 12 homers and 40 RBI while posting a .793 OPS.
In his fifth year with the White Sox, he's a lifetime .276 hitter with 83 homers and 251 RBI.
The White Sox have been one of the most disappointing teams in baseball this first half of the season.
They entered play on Sunday at 38-53 and 8.0 games out of first place in the American League Central.
They'll open up the second half of the season next Friday night when they take on the Atlanta Braves - the best team in baseball.
