Chicago White Sox Earn First Win as Lefty Makes Team History
The Chicago White Sox beat the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday night, 3-2, to earn their first win of the season.
After three-straight one-run losses to start the year, the White Sox earned the one-run win to move to 1-4.
Integral in the victory was White Sox' starting pitcher Garrett Crochet, who continues to impress in the early going. The hard-throwing lefty went 7.0 innings, allowing one earned run on just three hits. He walked one and struck out eight and has a 1.38 ERA through his first two starts.
He's also done something that no White Sox pitcher ever has before, according to Sarah Langs of MLB.com:
Garrett Crochet’s 16 strikeouts so far this season are the most in a pitcher’s 1st 2 career starts in White Sox franchise history
Crochet made his first career start on Opening Day as he transitions from a bullpen-exclusive role in 2024 and so far, so good. Though the White Sox are projected to have among the worst records in baseball, Crochet looks a solid win for the organization.
The 24-year-old is 4-8 lifetime with a 2.51 ERA in 74 games. He made his Major League debut during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season and made 54 appearances in 2021 but missed all of 2022 and most of 2023 while recovering from Tommy John surgery.
As a result of his injury history, the Sox will presumably be careful with his innings later in the year, but they'll ride him here in the early going.
The White Sox and Braves wrap up their series on Wednesday afternoon at 2:10 p.m. ET.
