Chicago White Sox' Key Piece Gets Optimistic Injury News, Still a Long Way From Returning
There was some good injury news on Wednesday regarding the Chicago White Sox and third baseman Yoan Moncada.
Moncada, who was just placed on the 60-day IL because of an adductor strain, is headed to Arizona to continue rehab.
Per Scott Merkin of MLB.com:
Moncada feeling better, going to Arizona to continue full rehab process
While it's good news that he's feeling better, it's also going to still be a long time until we see him on the field again. Because of the 60-day IL placement, he'll still be out until at least the middle of June, and potentially longer.
The 28-year-old former top prospect was out to a good start this year, hitting .282 with a .364 on-base percentage through 39 at-bats. He had no homers and no RBI yet, but he had stolen a base.
This injury continues a frustrating several years for Moncada on the South Side. Since arriving in a trade from the Boston Red Sox before the 2017 season Moncada, has dealt off and on with injury and general ineffectiveness.
He hit just .235 in first full season (2018), then hit only .225 in the COVID-shortened 2020 season. He rebounded to hit .263 in 2021, but only hit 14 homers. Since then, he's played just 104 and 92 games respectively. His best year was 2019 when he hit .315 in 132 games.
The White Sox are 2-14 entering play on Wednesday. In addition to Moncada, they have also lost Luis Robert Jr. to long-term injury. He'll be out at least two months.
