Chicago White Sox Insider Addresses Team's Plans Heading into 2024
The Chicago White Sox had a horrible season in 2023, finishing with the third-worst record in the American League. For a team that made the playoffs in both 2020 and 2021, going 61-101 was a steep and precipitous fall.
Chicago also started what appeared to be a teardown of the organization, trading Kendall Graveman, Jake Burger, Lance Lynn, Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo Lopez at the trade deadline.
But MLB.com's Scott Merkin says not so fast, he doesn't think that the organization is going to go through a complete rebuild.
From what I can discern, a rebuild is considered a total teardown of the roster last undertaken by then-general manager Rick Hahn and executive vice president Ken Williams during the 2016 offseason. It began with the trade of Chris Sale to Boston.
That direction doesn’t appear to be favored by general manager Chris Getz. The White Sox are focused on retooling with a solid talent base still in place, but they could take a slight step back in 2024 to better the future while holding out hope for competing in the AL Central. Playing in the AL Central can be viewed as a bit of a crutch for Chicago, but it always gives the club hope.
There are still questions for the organization this offseason what to do with Tim Anderson's player option and if they'll trade Dylan Cease, but Merkin says he doesn't expect the team to part with All-Star OF Luis Robert Jr.
He hit .264 this season with 38 homers and 80 RBI. He also stole 20 bases.
