Chicago White Sox' Liam Hendriks Gets Standing Ovation in Emotional Return to Mound
Chicago White Sox reliever Liam Hendriks delivered the best moment of the 2023 season on Monday night, making his season debut after batting and beating cancer this offseason.
He entered the game against the Los Angeles Angels in the eighth inning to a raucous and appreciative crowd.
You can watch the video of his return below:
Hendriks struggled in his return, and while that matters in the scorebook, it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. Just being out there is a huge accomplishment for Hendriks.
He went one inning, allowed three hits and two earned runs. He also had a walk and did not strike anyone out.
Still, he is one of the top closers in the league, having wrapped up 115 career saves, nearly all of which have come since 2019. He led the league in 2021 in saves with 38 for the White Sox.
Hendriks is now in his 13th major league season and has spent time with the Twins, Royals, Blue Jays, Athletics and White Sox. He's a three-time All-Star (2019, 2021-2022)
At the time of this posting, the Angels lead the White Sox, 6-3, in the bottom of the eighth inning.
The Angels have scored thanks to a three-home run from Brandon Drury, a solo homer from Matt Thaiss, a sac fly from Zach Neto and a single from Mike Trout.
The two teams will play again on Tuesday at 8:10 p.m. ET. Tyler Anderson will pitch for the Angels against Lucas Giolito.
