Chicago White Sox Reportedly Talking to Surprise Team About Dylan Cease Trade
On Tuesday we heard that the New York Yankees had put together a new trade proposal for Chicago White Sox' ace Dylan Cease. That made sense, given that the Yankees are waiting for results of an MRI on Gerrit Cole's elbow.
Now, Ken Rosenthal of 'The Athletic' reports that the White Sox are also talking to the World Champion Texas Rangers about Cease:
Early Tuesday, I heard the Texas Rangers might be close to acquiring Chicago White Sox right-hander Dylan Cease. The tip turned out not to be true, at least at that moment, but two sources briefed on the talks confirmed the teams engaged in recent discussions.
Which makes sense. There are growing indications that the White Sox are getting more serious about trading Cease. And the Rangers will begin their championship defense in 2024 with a patchwork starting staff.
The Rangers are missing Max Scherzer, Jacob deGrom and Tyler Mahle until at least midseason and are trying to piece it together until then. Since they just won the World Series, the team undoubtedly has leeway but they appear dead set on doing what they can to repeat as champions.
We recently heard that the White Sox were likely to hold onto Cease, instead looking to trade him at the deadline, but if the Rangers (or Yankees) are willing to meet the exorbitant asking price, maybe they'll change course now.
Rosenthal reports that the Sox are essentially looking for a major league player and two top prospects in return for Cease, who finished second in the American League Cy Young voting in 2022.
