Cincinnati Reds Grounds Crew Member Goes Viral After Rain Delay Blunder
Even while the tight contest between the Cincinnati Reds and San Francisco Giants was stuck in a rain delay Monday night, one moment still managed to go viral.
A member of the Reds' grounds crew at Great American Ball Park slipped while trying to carry the tarp over the infield, getting trapped as the rest of the crew continued to run along without him. The moment was captured by the NBC Sports Bay Area broadcast team, leading the announcers to share some play-by-play commentary of the mishap.
"Mayday – he got eaten by the tarp," said Giants analyst Hunter Pence. "Every man left behind, fend for yourself!"
Cincinnati and San Francisco were tied 2-2 in the top of the eighth inning before play was suspended. The Giants have runners on second and third with one out and third baseman JD Davis due up.
The Reds got on the board first Monday night, with rookie shortstop Matt McLain drilling a solo home run to right-center in the bottom of the first inning. Giants left fielder Austin Slater knotted things up with a solo homer of his own in the top of the third.
The long balls continued into the later stages of the game when Giants first baseman Wilmer Flores jacked one to left in the sixth, then again when Reds second baseman Jonathan India got a hold of one himself in the seventh.
While the Reds were on their third pitcher of the night – left-hander Alex Young – the Giants were still riding starter Logan Webb.
Webb will not be returning to the mound when play is resumed Tuesday at 5:40 p.m. ET, however. After the Reds and Giants wrap up the series opener, they will start game two at 7:10 p.m. ET.
