Cincinnati Reds Make Another Free Agent Splash, Sign Pitcher Brent Suter
The Cincinnati Reds have signed veteran left-hander Brent Suter to a one-year deal as they continue their offseason of investing in pitching.
Per Robert Murray of Fansided:
Free-agent pitcher Brent Suter and the Cincinnati Reds are in agreement on a contract, pending physical, according to sources familiar with the deal.
The deal pays Suter $2.5 million in 2024 and includes a $3.5 million club option with a $500,000 buyout.
Suter, 34, received interest from eight teams, with some inquiring about him as a potential starting pitcher, sources say. Teams were intrigued by his ability to keep the ball in the park (three homers allowed in 69.1 innings), his splits against right-handed hitters, and his ability to pitch multiple innings out of the bullpen.
It's unclear at this point how the Reds view Suter, but they had an immense need at starter coming into the offseason. The team has several young and exciting rotation candidates but health and inexperience is a concern. The Reds feature Hunter Greene, Nick Lodolo, Frankie Montas, Graham Ashcraft and Andrew Abbott as a likely preferred rotation at this time, but each of those but Abbott missed significant time just last year alone.
Brandon Williamson is also a rotation option, as is swingman Nick Martinez, who the Reds signed this offseason. Levi Stoudt is on the 40-man roster as well.
Suter went 4-3 last season with Colorado while appearing in 57 games. Prior to his stint with the Rockies, he spent seven years with the Brewers.
Lifetime, he's 40-22 with a 3.49 ERA. He has made 41 starts out of 253 career appearances.
