Colorado Rockies Have Interest in Bringing Back Former All-Star Next Year
As the Colorado Rockies look towards the future, they are interested in having veteran outfielder Charlie Blackmon be a part of it.
In an article that appeared in the Denver Post, Rockies general manager Bill Schmidt says they definitely could see bringing Blackmon back. He's a free agent after the 2023 season.
General manager Bill Schmidt said the Rockies are “very interested” in bringing back the veteran outfielder and designated hitter.
“Yes, we are, if things work out,” Schmidt said. “Charlie would provide a good leadership structure for our young guys. And he can still play.”
Blackmon said that he's undecided about what he'll do next year. He could retire, but if he plays, playing for Colorado is his first choice.
“There is definitely a possibility I’ll come back,” Blackmon said before starting in right field against the Orioles. “I’m not saying officially, either way, but I still feel like I’m going to be an effective player.”
Asked if he would consider playing for another team, Blackmon said, “Yeah, but Colorado is certainly my first choice. But I don’t want to think that far ahead. Right now, I’m not thinking about any other options.”
The 37-year-old Texas native is in his 13th year in the big leagues, all with the Rockies. He is a three-time All-Star who has received MVP votes in two separate seasons.
Lifetime, he's a .296 hitter with 214 home runs and 740 RBI.
This year, he's battled injury and is hitting .285 with seven home runs.
The Rockies will take on the Orioles on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. ET.
