Colorado Rockies Rookies, Veteran Named Finalists For NL Gold Glove Awards
A trio of Colorado Rockies have officially been recognized as some of the best defenders in baseball.
The finalists for the Rawlings Gold Glove Awards were announced Wednesday. Three players at each position are up for the award in both the American League and National League.
Shortstop Ezequiel Tovar, third baseman Ryan McMahon and center fielder Brenton Doyle were among the finalists.
Tovar played 153 games at short as a rookie this season, making just seven errors in 578 chances. He posted a .988 fielding percentage and a 2.5 dWAR.
Doyle, another breakout Rockies rookie, had 10 outfield assists to just one error in 125 appearances. Corner outfielder Nolan Jones led Colorado and the entire NL with 19 outfield assists, but Doyle's 2.2 dWAR cleared Jones' 0.7 mark.
As opposed to all the young guns who broke out for the Rockies this year, McMahon has been an everyday player for the club for five seasons. The 28-year-old put up 12 errors, a .969 fielding percentage and a 2.1 dWAR en route to his third straight year as a Gold Glove finalist.
Tovar will go against New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor and Chicago Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson, while Doyle will try to fend off Atlanta Braves outfielder Michael Harris II and Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Alek Thomas. The other finalists at third alongside McMahon are Braves' star Austin Riley and Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Ke'Bryan Hayes.
The full list of Gold Glove finalists can be found here.
Winners will be announced Nov. 5 on ESPN. Managers and coaches across the league make up the deciding voting body.
