Dodgers Reporter Issues Apology Upon Getting Shohei Ohtani Report Wrong
Remember last Friday -- all the craziness that accompanied Shohei Ohtani's free agency decision?
We had internet sleuths checking on the status of private jets and we had a report from Jon Morosi of MLB.com saying that Ohtani was en route to Toronto (presumably to sign with the Blue Jays).
Well, before all that, we had a report from J.P. Hoornstra of DodgersNation.com which said that Ohtani was signing in Toronto. That initial report helped set off all the other craziness that happened.
Well, 24 hours later on Saturday, Ohtani was signing with the Dodgers and Morosi was issuing an apology for getting his report wrong.
On Tuesday, Hoornstra did the same, taking to social media.
In his video post, which you can watch below, he talked about his sources and said he got played and said he'd work to be better in the future.
I can appreciate Hoornstra stepping in front of the microphone and delivering the message. While it's not an excuse for journalists, it is fair to point out that often times the media will get misled on things, even those at the national level.
The apology does little to make Blue Jays fans feel better. Those fans felt they had secured the biggest free agent in baseball history, and Opening Day tickets in Toronto were sold out by mid-afternoon on Friday, likely based upon the excitement.
Instead, Ohtani goes to the Dodgers to pair with Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman and will end up making up the best trio of players in the entire league.
