ESPN MLB Insider Discusses if the Boston Red Sox Could Trade Turner and Jansen at the Trade Deadline
At 34-35 and in last place in the American League East, the Boston Red Sox aren't inspiring a lot of confidence right now.
But at 34-35 and 5.0 games back of a wild card spot, the Sox are certainly not out of it.
As the team tries to figure out its best course of action over the 1.5 months before the trade deadline, the fanbase is wondering which players could be added if the team becomes buyers and which ones could be traded if the team becomes sellers.
On the sellers side, Enrique Hernandez, Adam Duvall and James Paxton all would be likely candidates, as they are all on affordable contracts that expire at the end of the year.
It's also fair to wonder about the futures of veterans Justin Turner and Kenley Jansen as well. Both players are under contract with the Red Sox for 2024, so they could hold onto them, but they could also trade them and try recoup some value heading into 2024.
Speaking on 'The Brady Farkas Show' on Thursday, ESPN MLB Insider Buster Olney was asked about those two players specifically:
"If I'm the Red Sox, look, I'm at least putting them out there. And I'm asking the question of teams like the Mets, who could use a Kenley Jansen. They are in an increasingly desperate situation where they're trying to plug the gap for Edwin Diaz, who got hurt in spring training...."
Jansen is 2-3 this season with a 3.18 ERA. He's got 14 saves and has struck out 26 batters in 22.2 innings.
Turner is hitting .272 with eight homers, 30 RBI and three stolen bases.
The Red Sox play the Yankees on Friday at 7:10 p.m. ET.
