ESPN Owes Triston Casas an Apology For Mothers Day Question

The ESPN broadcast team had Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas "mic'd up" on Sunday Night Baseball and asked him an inexcusable question about Mothers Day. His mother passed when he was younger.

ESPN owes Triston Casas an apology.

On 'Sunday Night Baseball,' the ESPN crew had the Red Sox first baseman "mic'd up."

The broadcast did a mostly great job incorporating Mothers Day into its broadcast, from surprising Sox manager Alex Cora with a video chat from his mother, to the wholesome content provided by Lars Nootbaar and his mother.

But when talking to Casas, the crew crossed the line. They asked Casas what Mothers Day meant to him, which was inappropriate given that Casas' mother died when he was younger.

To Casas' credit, he answered the question well, talking about all the "mother" figures he's had in his life and his great support system.

That doesn't excuse the question from longtime veteran Karl Ravech, who should have known better than to ask it, especially mid-game. That is not the time nor the place for such a serious question.

Also, it was made even more awkward because the question was asked during a 3-0 count, so Casas had to answer the question and then have Cardinals infielder Nolan Gorman run down to first base after drawing a walk.

As for the game itself, the Cardinals won 9-1 to complete a three-game sweep. The Red Sox have now lost four of five and will welcome in the Seattle Mariners to town tonight.

First pitch from Fenway Park is 7:10 p.m. St. Louis will go home to host Milwaukee in a divisional battle. The Cardinals are 16-25 in the National League Central.
