After firing hitting coach Dillon Lawson over the weekend, the New York Yankees have made a surprising hire, tabbing former MLB player and MLB Network commentator Sean Casey for the same role.

MLB Insider Jon Heyman had the information on social media. He says Casey will have the position through the end of the season.

The 49-year-old Casey spent 12 years in the big leagues, most notably with the Cincinnati Reds. He also spent time with the Cleveland franchise, the Pittsburgh Pirates, Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox.

A lifetime .302 hitter, he also popped 130 career homers and drove in 735 while amassing more than 1,500 hits.

He earned All-Star selections in 1999, 2001, and 2004 with the Reds and appeared in the playoffs twice. He reached the World Series with the Tigers in 2006, losing to the Cardinals, and the ALCS with the Red Sox in 2008, losing to the Rays.

He had been working for the MLB Network as a broadcaster.

In the absence of Aaron Judge, who is out with a toe injury, the Yankees have struggled offensively.

The Yankees are near the bottom of several major offensive categories including batting average, where they are tied for 28th in baseball at .231. They also are 29th in hits and 26th in on-base percentage.

Despite that however, the Yankees are seven games over .500 at 49-42. Unfortunately, that's only good enough for fourth place in the American League East.

They are 8.0 games back of the first-place Tampa Bay Rays in the division and are 1.0 game back of the final wild card spot as well.

They'll open the second half of the season on Friday night, July 15 against the Colorado Rockies in Colorado.
