Former Major League Pitcher Arrested and Accused of Murder
Former Major League pitcher Dan Serafini was arrested in Nevada on Friday in connection with the murder of his father-in-law.
Per WPXI in Pittsburgh:
Serafini is accused of shooting his father-in-law, Gary Spohr, and his mother-in-law, Wendy Wood, in Lake Tahoe in 2021.
Spohr died at the scene. Wood survived the initial shooting, but died about a year later.
NBC News reports that as recently as July, Serafini’s wife said she had no idea who shot her parents.
It’s not clear what led to the breakthrough in the case.
There was additional information put forward in a story that appeared in the New York Post, including that a woman named Samantha Scott was also arrested.
Serafini and Scott also are facing charges regarding their possible involvement in the attempted murder of Wendy Wood, 68, according to WLWT5.
Wood was hospitalized after the shooting but survived, but she then took her own life 10 months later, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
According to the Chronicle, the gunman allegedly waited about five hours after sneaking into the house before Spohr and Wood came back home.
The 49-year-old Serafini spent parts of seven years in the big leagues with the Twins, Rockies, Pirates, Padres, Reds and Cubs. He made 104 career appearances in those seven years, including 33 starts.
He was a lifetime 15-16 pitcher with a 6.04 ERA. His two most prominent years were in 1998, when he made 28 appearances for the Twins, and 1999, when he made 42 for the Cubs.
He also represented Italy in the World Baseball Classic in 2009.
