Though he is still unsigned, right-handed pitcher Michael Lorenzen is reportedly holding fast to the idea of wanting a two-year contract.

The information was relayed by Ken Rosenthal of 'The Athletic:'

Free-agent right-hander Michael Lorenzen continues to seek a two-year deal, according to sources briefed on his intentions.

Lorenzen, 32, earned $9.25 million last season, including $750,000 in incentives. An increase in his average annual value on a two-year deal would put him in the range of a $20 million guarantee.

From Lorenzen's perspective, it certainly makes sense that he would want a multi-year deal. At 32 and coming off an All-Star appearance with the Detroit Tigers, he likely sees this as his best chance to capitalize in the free agent market. However, given the slow trickle of free agency, he may best served waiting for a team to suffer an injury and to get a little desperate (paging Boston Red Sox after today's Lucas Giolito news).

The California native has pitched in nine major league seasons with the Cincinnati Reds, Los Angeles Angels, Tigers and Philadelphia Phillies. He went 9-9 last season with the Tigers and Phillies (he was traded midseason). Lorenzen tossed a no-hitter upon arrival in Philadelphia and is 40-38 lifetime with a 4.11 ERA.

For teams that don't want to pony up for Blake Snell or Jordan Montgomery, Lorenzen would represent a cheaper alternative. Any team that needs starting depth could use him, but the question remains as to when the dam will break and his market will activate.
