New York Yankees' Former Championship Manager Offered Division I College Job
Former New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies and Florida Marlins manager Joe Girardi has been offered a Division I head coaching job at the University of Central Florida, per a report from Mark Feinsand of MLB.com.
He wrote on Twitter:
Joe Girardi has been offered the head baseball coach position at the University of Central Florida, sources tell me and @juanctoribio. Girardi, who has managed the Marlins, Yankees and Phillies and won the 2009 WS, has not made a decision yet as to whether he will accept the job.
He spent parts of 14 years as a manager in the big leagues.
He managed the Marlins in 2006 to a 78-84 record and then spent 10 years with the Yankees (2008-2017), going 910-710 and winning the World Series in 2009, over the Phillies.
He then managed the Phillies in 2020, 2021 and part 2022 before being fired. Rob Thomson took the Phillies to the World Series after assuming the job.
As a player, he spent 15 years in the big leagues with the Cubs, Rockies, Yankees and Cardinals. He helped the Yankees win the World Series in 1996, 1998 and 1999.
A catcher, he was a lifetime .267 hitter with 36 homers and 1100 hits exactly.
UCF went 33-26 this past season and finished 12-12 inside American Athletic Conference play. They were bounced in the conference tournament after one win by a combination of losses to South Florida and East Carolina.
We'll continue to monitor this story as it moves forward and Girardi makes a decision.
