Former Seattle Mariners, Chicago White Sox Flamethrower Heads to New York Mets in Mini Trade
After bouncing around the majors for the last few years, right-handed reliever Yohan Ramirez has been traded from the Chicago White Sox to the New York Mets.
The White Sox acquired cash in the deal. Ramirez had recently been designated for assignment.
The 28-year-old Ramirez is a hard thrower who started his career in 2020 with the Seattle Mariners. He pitched with the M's from 2020 to part of 2022 before then going to Cleveland, Pittsburgh and the White Sox. He made 31 appearances in the big leagues this past season, going 1-0 with a 4.23 ERA.
This was the biggest workload of his career as he tossed 38.1 innings for Pittsburgh and Chicago.
He's an interesting arm for the Mets to take a flier on as he's always been able to post decent strikeout numbers.
From another article on Ramirez, via MLBTradeRumors:
He’s totaled 124 innings of 3.99 ERA ball as a big leaguer, striking out 23.2% of his opponents against a 12.5% walk rate that’s well north of the league average. Ramirez was a fly-ball pitcher early in his career but switched from a four-seamer to a two-seamer in 2022 and has since been a pronounced ground-ball arm (54.1%).
His newfound ability to get groundballs could be useful for the Mets bullpen as they look to improve upon a fourth-place finish in the National League East.
New York is remaking the entire pitching staff so right now they are just acquiring names and seeing what shakes out over the course of spring training.
