Details on the Reported Offer That J.D. Martinez Rejected From the San Francisco Giants

On Saturday, we learned that slugger J.D. Martinez rejected an offer from the San Francisco Giants this offseason. Now, we know what that offer was.

Free agent slugger J.D. Martinez reportedly rejected a one-year, $14 million contract offer from the San Francisco Giants this offseason, according to insider Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

Per Nightengale:

The San Francisco Giants offered DH J.D. Martinez a one-year, $14 million contract, which he rejected, seeking a two-year deal. The Giants then turned to Jorge Soler, signing him to a three-year, $42 million contract.

Both sides of this coin are understandable. From the Giants perspective, they don't want to be tied to a 36-year-old player for more than one year, fearing that he may go downhill. Also, considering that Martinez played on a one-year, $10 million last year with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Giants probably feel good about giving a player who is another a year older a $4 million raise.

From Martinez's standpoint, he wants to capitalize on his All-Star season. The veteran hit .271 with 33 homers for the Dodgers a season ago. He also recognizes this could be his last great contract in baseball, and he wants to make it count.

Now, the Giants have Soler who is younger than Martinez and will occupy their designated hitter slot, while Martinez is still out looking for a team. There are teams that need offensive help like the Seattle Mariners, Miami Marlins, New York Mets and Cleveland Guardians, but we'll see if any of them want to pony up for the veteran.

He's a six-time All-Star who has played for the Astros, Tigers, Diamondbacks, Red Sox and Dodgers. He starred for Detroit from 2014-2017 before being traded to Arizona at the trade deadline. Lifetime, he's a .287 hitter with 315 homers and 1,002 RBI. He helped Boston win the World Series in 2018.
