The Houston Astros beat the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday night by a score of 6-5 in 11 innings. It was the first win in extra innings all season for Houston, breaking a dubious mark in baseball.

Per ESPN Stats & Info:

The Astros' 6-5, 11-inning win over the Dodgers Sunday night marked their 1st extra-inning win in 7 tries this season. With Houston's win, only the Padres (0-6), Diamondbacks (0-3) & Royals (0-3) have yet to record an extra-inning triumph in 2023.

With the new-ish "automatic runner" rule in extra-innings, these games are decided much quicker than in the past and the results tend to be a little more fluky. As a result, extra inning wins or losses can really sway a team's season, so Houston normalizing these results would go a long way in getting back to the playoffs.

Alex Bregman had the go-ahead single for the Astros in the 11th and went 1-5 on the day. Jose Abreu, who has really struggled since joining the Astros, went 2-5 with a home run.

The Astros are now 42-36 on the season and in second place in the American League West. They trail the first-place Texas Rangers by 5.5 games and are 0.5 games behind the Blue Jays for the second wild card spot in the AL.

They are off on Monday but will be back in action on Tuesday at 7:45 p.m. ET. They'll visit the St. Louis Cardinals as ace Framber Valdez takes the mound.

He's 7-5 with a 2.27 ERA and is poised for an All-Star selection.
