Houston Astros Lose a Second Starting Pitcher In Two Days to Arm Injury
Injury has struck the Houston Astros starting rotation for the second time in as many days.
On Sunday, the Astros lost starting pitcher Jose Urquidy to an arm injury and on Monday, they lost Luis Garcia to an arm injury as well.
Here's what we know right now on both pitchers:
Urquidy has already been placed on the injured list. Chandler Rome of The Athletic got additional information from manager Dusty Baker after Monday's game against the Giants:
"Jose Urquidy has inflammation in his right shoulder, Dusty Baker said. Baker said he will shut down and out "a while."'
As for Garcia, he left in the first inning on Monday with an elbow issue:
Rome says "Luis Garcia said he "felt pain" in his elbow at around his fifth pitch of the game. He came out after his eighth. Garcia said he didn't feel a pop. MRI tomorrow."
The Yahoo! Sports fantasy baseball database has more specific information on Garcia's situation:
Garcia allowed a leadoff single to LaMonte Wade Jr. and was engaged in a six-pitch battle with Thairo Estrada when he summoned for the training staff and was shaking his pitching arm. It's the second straight game in which an Astros' starter has exited early -- with Sunday's starter Jose Urquidy ultimately landing on the injured list.
Losing both pitchers would be a blow to the Astros, who are currently 16-13 and in second place in the American League West.
Urquidy made his debut in 2019 and owns a lifetime 25-15 record and a career 3.85 ERA.
As for this season, he's 2-2 with a 5.20 ERA. He helped the Astros win the World Series a season ago. Garcia, 26, is 2-2 this season with a 4.00 ERA. He's 28-19 for his career.
The Astros play the Giants again on Tuesday at 8:10 p.m. ET.
