Dusty Baker Reportedly Ready to Step Down as Houston Astros Manager Following Game 7 Loss
After losing to the Texas Rangers in Game 7 of the ALCS on Monday night, Dusty Baker is reportedly ready to step down as manager of the Houston Astros.
'The Athletic' had the initial report:
JUST IN: Dusty Baker has expressed to multiple inside & outside the Astros organization that 2023 will be his final season as manager, sources tell The Athletic.
2x World Series Champion
3x Manager of the Year
19 years as a player
26 years as a manager
From the story:
Multiple sources not authorized to speak publicly told The Athletic they think Baker wants to remain in the game in some capacity. So why would Baker not make it more public that he is ready to turn in his permanent perch in the dugout for another role in baseball?
A few reasons. First, Baker didn’t want the attention that would come with a farewell tour, several sources believe. In addition, Baker, who told The Athletic multiple times he was “thinking about” retirement, still has a chance to change his mind. According to multiple sources, this is the first season Baker has talked about leaving managing and getting some time away from the day-to-day grind of the game.
Baker has managed the Astros since the 2020 season. He was brought after AJ Hinch was fired for his role in the 2017 sign-stealing scandal. He led the Astros to the World Series in 2021 and 2022, winning the title in 2022.
He's also taken five different franchises to the playoffs (Giants, Cubs, Reds, Nationals and Astros). He has 2,183 career wins in the regular season.
The Rangers will meet the Phillies or the Diamondbacks in the World Series.
