Shohei Ohtani Accomplishes Something Not Done For Nearly 60 Years!
It feels like every time that Shohei Ohtani takes the field in 2023, he's making history.
The Los Angeles Angels superstar accomplished something that hadn't been done in baseball in nearly 60 years against the Baltimore Orioles on Monday night.
Sarah Langs of MLB.com tweeted out the information:
- Shohei Ohtani is tied for most 3+ hit games as pitcher in a single season in expansion era (1961), with 3 it is MAY
- Ohtani is the 1st player to reach base safely 5+ times in a game he pitched since Mel Stottlemyre on 9/26/64 - the HR was 456 ft, 114.6 mph
JUST ANOTHER DAY
We're focusing on the middle stat here. Ohtani went 4-5 at the plate with a homer, a triple and two singles. He also added a walk. He also scored three runs and drove in three for the Angels, who won 9-5.
For the season, Ohtani is hitting .303 through 155 at-bats. He's got nine homers, 29 RBI and six steals. For his career, he's a .270 hitter with 136 home runs.
On the mound, Ohtani struggled a bit on Monday against the powerful Orioles lineup. He got the win and went seven innings, but he gave up five earned runs and surrendered three homers.
For the year, he's 5-1 with a 3.23 ERA.
The win moved the Angels to 22-20 on the season while the loss dropped the Orioles to 26-15.
The Angels are in third place in the American League West, three games back of Texas, while the O's are in second place in the AL East, 4.5 back of Tampa Bay.
