Miami Marlins Considering Understandable Move with Rookie Starter
The Miami Marlins are considering the logical move of reducing the workload on young starting pitcher Eury Perez.
The following update comes from the Rotowire fantasy baseball portal:
The Marlins are considering pausing Perez following his scheduled start next weekend against Atlanta, Craig Mish of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Nothing is set in stone just yet, but it appears the Marlins are looking to give Perez an extended rest period heading into the All-Star break. The 20-year-old rookie has been phenomenal since arriving in the majors, recording a 1.54 ERA and 1.00 WHIP with a 45:14 K:BB through 41 frames. With 72 innings pitched between Triple-A and the majors this season, Perez is quickly approaching the most innings he's ever thrown in a season (78).
The move will likely be frustrating to fans who know that Perez gives them a good chance to win each time out, but it also has to be understandable given his future value and meaning to the organization.
The 20-year-old made his major league debut on May 12 at the age of 19 and has been spectacular as the stats indicate.
He's also a major reason why the Marlins have been able to perform so well this season. Miami is 43-34 entering play on Saturday and currently holds one of the wild card spots in the National League.
At the time of this posting, the Marlins lead the Pittsburgh Pirates, 2-0, in the top of the sixth inning. The Pirates have lost 10 of their last 11 games.
The series wraps up on Sunday.
