The Milwaukee Brewers swung a trade for a versatile veteran on Friday, acquiring slugger Jake Bauers from the New York Yankees.

Per the Brewers on social media:

1B/OF Jake Bauers has been acquired from the Yankees in exchange for outfielders Jace Avina and Brian Sánchez.

The 28-year-old played well for the Yankees in 2023, hitting 12 homers in just 242 at-bats. He also drove in 30 runs and scored 28 on his own. Not much of an average hitter, he posted a .202 clip and had a .279 on-base percentage. He does provide some defensive versatility, having logged time in left, right and at first base last year.

He just finished his fourth big league season with the Rays, Guardians, Mariners and Yankees. The 12 home runs this year tied for his previous career-high. He did not appear in the majors in either 2020 or 2022.

More on the trade came in courtesy of Kyle Glaser of Baseball America:

The Brewers acquired 1B/OF Jake Bauers from the Yankees today in exchange for prospect outfielders Jace Avina and Brian Sanchez.

For reference, neither Avina nor Sanchez was set to rank in the Brewers Top 30 prospects in the upcoming BA Prospect Handbook.

Neither player is in the top 30 of the Yankees system either, per MLB.com.

Bauers should get an opportunity to compete in spring training for a bench role for Milwaukee. They are loaded with outfielders on the 40-man roster, so perhaps they can utilize Bauers at first base, should he make the team.
