Milwaukee Brewers Manager Craig Counsell to Interview For Different Managerial Post
After much speculation, Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell will interview with the New York Mets for their managerial vacancy.
There is a logical tie-in here, as David Stearns was just hired to run the Mets Baseball Operations department. He previously ran the Brewers and worked with Counsell.
Andy Martino of SNY had the information:
The Mets have received permission to interview Craig Counsell for the manager job, according to league sources. Brewers had initially indicated they would not grant it, and Counsell’s contract would have to expire. They have changed course, and Mets will be interviewing him soon.
Counsell is expected to explore other opportunities, including the Brewers. And the Mets will interview other candidates. This is NOT a done deal.
Counsell's contract with Milwaukee is up at the end of the month, so if he doesn't want to re-up, he could land in New York. It is still possible that he could end up back with the Brewers, as Martino indicates. He is a Wisconsin native.
Counsell has managed the Brewers since 2015 and has been to the playoffs five times.
A former player, Counsell spent parts of 16 years in the big leagues with the Rockies, Marlins, Dodgers, Diamondbacks and Brewers. He won the World Series in 1997 with the Marlins and in 2001 with the D'Backs.
He was a lifetime .255 hitter.
In addition to questions about Counsell, the Brewers also have questions about the future of Corbin Burnes and Willy Adames. Brandon Woodruff will likely miss the entire 2024 season with a shoulder injury.
