The Milwaukee Brewers, out to a 10-5 start and currently in first place in the National League Central, got devastating news on Saturday, as star pitcher Brandon Woodruff is set to miss significant time with a Grade-2 subscapular strain.

He has been placed on the 15-day injured list and could be moved to the 60-day injury list if the Brewers need the roster spot.

Speaking to reporters after the Brewers loss to the Padres on Saturday, Woodruff discussed his situation:

If this was something that happened midseason, All-Star break, right before or after that time, I would probably end up being done, to be honest, for the season."

I’m not going to rush this, I’m not going to come back too early just for the sake of coming back early,” Woodruff said. “That’s just not going to do anybody any good. I’m going to take my time, I’m going to listen to my body and trust the rehab process and just go through that, and hopefully come back at whatever point that is throughout the season and then try to finish up strong.”

Manager Craig Counsell said the team will have a more definitive idea about the rehab process and a possible return when they get home from this roadtrip next week.

This is a big loss for the Brewers, as Woodruff has been one of the National League's best pitchers in recent years. He has a career 3.14 ERA, has made two all-star games and finished in the top five of the NL Cy Young voting in 2021.

This season, he is 1-0 with a 0.79 ERA.
