Milwaukee Brewers Reportedly Discussing Ace Pitcher in Trade Discussions This Offseason
The Milwaukee Brewers are reportedly discussing starting pitcher Brandon Woodruff in trade talks with other teams this offseason, according to Jon Morosi of MLB.com.
Per Morosi on "X," formerly known as Twitter:
The Brewers are discussing Brandon Woodruff in trade conversations with multiple teams, as I reported on @MLBNetwork today.
Woodruff will miss the start of '24 after undergoing shoulder surgery, but teams see value in (a) having him for 2nd half and (b) QO value after '24
So, this is interesting for a few different reasons.
1) Woodruff was thought to be missing most, if not, all of the season. The idea that he could come back to a team for the second half of a season is something new. Is that true, or just incredibly optimistic? We'll have to wait and see.
2) The idea of the qualifying offer is interesting as well. A few things are at play here. The qualifying offer is a one-year deal. If Woodruff misses most of the season (or all) with injury, he could be in line for a one-year "prove it deal." Perhaps a team would be confident he'd accept that deal and they'd get a premiere pitcher at a relatively affordable price.
Furthermore, if he declined in search of a more lucrative offer, the team that loses him could get a draft pick, which would be beneficial as well.
He is a lifetime 46-26 pitcher with a 3.10 ERA. The 30-year-old has paired at the top of the rotation with Corbin Burnes to make one of the best duos in the sport for Milwaukee.
