Milwaukee Brewers Reportedly Finalizing Deal with Free Agent Slugger Rhys Hoskins
First baseman Rhys Hoskins and the Milwaukee Brewers are finalizing a multi-year deal, ESPN's Jeff Passan reported Tuesday night.
Hoskins' contract is expected to be worth $34 million over two years. He will have an opt-out after the first season, per Passan.
The soon-to-be 31-year-old slugger had spent his entire seven-year MLB career with the Philadelphia Phillies prior to hitting free agency earlier this offseason. He starred for the team on their run to the 2022 World Series, endearing himself to Philadelphia fans with clutch moments throughout.
Hoskins did not play in 2023 due to a torn ACL he suffered in March. In his last season before getting hurt, Hoskins hit 30 home runs with 79 RBI in 156 appearances.
After splitting time between first base and left field for his first few MLB seasons, Hoskins served as the Phillies' primary first baseman from 2018 through 2022. Hoskins racked up 148 home runs, 405 RBI and an 11.1 WAR during his time in Philadelphia.
Hoskins is a .242 hitter for his career, and he boasts an .846 OPS on top of that.
The Brewers had long been pegged as a fit for Hoskins – as had the Washington Nationals, who signed Joey Gallo earlier Tuesday.
Hoskins immediately fills a position of need for Milwaukee, which was in position to platoon Jake Bauers and Owen Miller at first before this most recent signing. Hoskins could also get time as the Brewers' designated hitter, but that spot could belong to All-Star Christian Yelich now that the young trio of Sal Frelick, Garrett Mitchell and Jackson Chourio appear ready to join the major league outfield.
