Milwaukee Brewers Set to Make Managerial Hire to Replace Craig Counsell
The Milwaukee Brewers are set to hire their replacement for manager Craig Counsell.
Per Ken Rosenthal of 'The Athletic.'
Brewers expected to name Pat Murphy their new manager, sources tell @TheAthletic.
Murphy, Craig Counsell’s former coach at Notre Dame and his bench coach in Milwaukee from 2015 to ‘23, would become his rival in the NL Central.
Counsell stunned the baseball world recently when he bolted from Milwaukee for the Chicago Cubs, but perhaps the continuity provided by hiring an in-house replacement can lessen the sting for fans and players alike.
Per an MLBTradeRumors article on the expected hire:
Murphy, 64, has never been formally hired for the manager’s role with a big league organization but has plenty of experience managing in baseball nonetheless. He ran the Padres for 96 games on an interim basis in 2015 after Bud Black was dismissed that June. Murphy also spent more than 20 years as a head coach in college baseball for Arizona State and Notre Dame.
The Brewers have historically been very good, and just won the National League Central this past season. However, there are certainly questions about the direction of the franchise. Corbin Burnes, former NL Cy Young winner, is entering his final year of arbitration and could end up being traded this offseason. Furthermore, ace Brandon Woodruff is expected to miss the entirety of the season with a shoulder injury.
Also, the National League Central is getting better. The Cubs and Cardinals appear primed to spend big this offseason, while the Reds boast one of the most talented rosters in the entire league.
