Minnesota Twins' Leader Makes Frustrating Revelation at General Managers Meetings
Minnesota Twins' President of Baseball Operations Derek Falvey made a frustrating revelation to fans on Tuesday at the General Managers Meetings in Arizona: The team is looking cut payroll in 2024.
Just weeks after winning the American League Central and winning a wild card series in the playoffs, the Twins should be hellbent on winning a World Series, instead, it looks like they are going to pull in the spending.
Per Bobby Nightengale Jr. of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune:
"We've pushed our payroll to heights that we had never pushed it before with the support, certainly, of ownership. We know there is some natural ebb and flow to that," Falvey said Tuesday from the annual General Managers Meetings. "Will it be where it was last year? I don't expect that. I expect it less than that."
He reports that the Twins had a payroll north of $156 million in 2023 and already have $125 million committed to next year's roster. So how much more do they really want to add to that? It's unclear, but they evidently aren't looking to make up the $31 million gap this offseason.
That may make re-signing American League Cy Young finalist Sonny Gray a tough task. However, there is one solution to freeing up some money: Trading either or both of Jorge Polanco and Max Kepler.
Both players just had their contract options picked up, but both could be moved and could save the team $10 million or more. Perhaps that's a solution towards acquiring talent, and/or re-signing Gray without taking on payroll.
