Minnesota Twins May Already Know What they Are Doing with Regards to Key Offseason Questions
After winning the American League Central and getting to the American League Division Series this year, the Minnesota Twins enter an offseason full of questions.
That said, they may already know the answer to two of those big questions:
According to Twins reporter Bobby Nightengale Jr., the club is expected to pick up the contract options on both Jorge Polanco and Max Kepler. What happens next is anyone's guess:
Assuming the Twins pick up the club options for both players, which is the expectation around the league, Kepler and Polanco might hear their names involved in trade rumors throughout the winter.
The 30-year-old Kepler hit 24 homers for the Twins this season while also hitting .260. He has spent nine years in Minnesota and has been a highly productive player most years. He popped 36 home runs in the 2019 season and is a lifetime .236 hitter. His contract option is for $10 million.
As for Polanco, he has spent 10 years in the big leagues, all with the Twins. He made the All-Star team back in 2019 and is a career .269 hitter. Polanco's contract option is for $10.5 million. He has an addition club option heading into the 2025 season as well.
While both players could certainly be useful for the Twins, they could certainly be trade pieces as Nightengale Jr. suggests. A team like the Seattle Mariners, who needs offense, could look to pair with Minnesota on a deal.
If the team loses Sonny Gray in free agency, the Twins could need pitching, which the Mariners have. Perhaps there's a deal to be made there.
The Twins were beaten by the Houston Astros in four games in the American League Division Series.
