MLB Insider Drops Bombshell Report on Shohei Ohtani, Mike Trout as Offseason Ramps Up
Late on Friday night, MLB Insider Hector Gomez stirred the pot with regards to rumors about both Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout.
Per Gomez on "X," formerly known as Twitter.
SOURCE: The #Dodgers will be very aggressive looking to sign the two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani and get the 11-time All-Star center fielder Mike Trout via trade. They are willing to give up their best prospects in exchange for landing Trout.
We already knew that the Dodgers wanted Ohtani (they are considered the favorite) but Trout's inclusion is a new twist into the rumor mill.
There's a few interesting things to consider here.
1) Ohtani and Trout are incredible and both are destined for the Hall of Fame, that's undeniable. But, the 2023 Dodgers were felled by lack of pitching (due to injury), and neither of those guys can pitch next season. Ohtani won't be pitching again until 2025, so as nice as it would be to have them both, they still don't address the Dodgers' main need for next season.
2) It's also not known if Trout would want to cross over and go to the Dodgers, but you'd have to assumer he would. The Dodgers are better positioned for success than the Angels and he'd get to stay in the same market that he's grown up in - and he doesn't have to move his family. He does have a full no-trade clause.
3) Though Trout would probably agree to a deal, it remains to be seen if Angels' owner Arte Moreno would actually deal him to the cross-town rivals. Could he stomach losing both Ohtani and Trout to the Dodgers?
Ohtani just won his second American League MVP Award after hitting 44 home runs. He's expected to get the richest contract in baseball history in free agency. Trout dealt with injury last year and only played one game after July 3rd. He hit .263 with 18 home runs. He's an 11-time All-Star, a three-time MVP and a nine-time Silver Slugger.
The Dodgers won the National League West last season but were swept by the Diamondbacks in the NLDS.
