New York Mets and Texas Rangers Reportedly Have Agreed to a Max Scherzer Trade
The New York Mets and Texas Rangers have reportedly agreed to a trade that would send ace pitcher Max Scherzer to the Rangers.
Insider Jon Heyman reports that the deal is agreed to, but contingent on Scherzer waiving his no-trade clause.
The Rangers are seeking their first playoff berth since 2016 and are pulling out all the stops to do so. In the last two years, they've spent lavishly in free agency on Corey Seager, Marcus Semien, Jacob deGrom, Andrew Heaney and Nathan Eovaldi. They've also traded for Aroldis Chapman earlier this year.
The Rangers lead the American League West by 2.0 games over the Houston Astros heading into play on Saturday.
The 39-year-old Scherzer is 9-4 this year with a 4.01 ERA in 19 starts. He's got the ability to opt out of his contract and become a free agent at season's end. He could also opt-in and remain in Texas for 2024.
Over his career, he's one of the best pitchers of his generation. He's 210-106 with a 3.15 ERA lifetime. He's an eight-time All-Star and a three-time Cy Young winner who also has won a World Series in 2019 with the Nationals.
The Rangers have been looking for pitching help and landing Scherzer would certainly do that, especially given that deGrom is out for the year with a UCL injury.
The Rangers play the Padres on Saturday night while the Mets host the Nationals.
If Scherzer is dealt, it would be the second big Mets trade in the week, as they dealt David Robertson to Miami also.
