Chicago Cubs infielder Christopher Morel wasn't the only one making history on Tuesday night at Wrigley Field.

New York Mets slugging first baseman Pete Alonso was too.

Alonso hit his 18th home run of the season, which is the most home runs ever hit by a Mets player through the team's first 50 games. That broke the record by Dave Kingman.

ESPN Stats & Info has more on Twitter saying:

In his 49th game Pete Alonso's 18 HR are the most through 50 team games in Mets franchise history.

Alonso went 1-3 on the day with the home run and two RBI. He also added a walk and is now hitting .230 for the season with the 18 homers and 43 RBI. His 18 homers lead all of baseball while his 43 RBIs are fourth.

For his career, he's a .258 hitter with 164 home runs and 423 RBI.

He was a second-round pick in the 2016 draft out of the University of Florida and made his major league debut in 2019.

He's a two-time All-Star selection who won the Rookie of the Year in 2019. He's also received MVP votes in two different seasons.

The Mets lost to the Cubs, 7-2, falling to 25-24 on the season. With the loss, they are now 5.5 back of the first-place Atlanta Braves.

The Cubs are 21-26 after the win and are 4.5 back of the first-place Brewers.

The Mets and Cubs will play again on Wednesday night at 7:40 p.m. ET.
