New York Mets Rookie Leading Baseball in This Clutch Category
The New York Mets beat the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday by a score of 2-1.
The Mets scored two runs in the ninth inning to get the win courtesy of a Francisco Alvarez home run and a Mark Canha triple.
The home run by Alvarez put him in the lead in this clutch baseball category, according to Sarah Langs of MLB.com:
Francisco Alvarez now has 5 game-tying or go-ahead home runs in the 6th inning or later this season
THAT’S THE MOST IN MLB
HE IS A 21-YEAR-OLD ROOKIE CATCHER!!
To lead baseball in that category is impressive on many levels. First, to be that young and that productive is exceedingly rare. Doing it in New York under the microscope and pressure of those fans is also difficult, and as a catcher it's even more difficult because you don't play every day.
Alvarez went 2-for-4 in the win and is how hitting .221 with 15 homers and 30 RBI this season. In a season that has seen the Mets slump to a 40-46 record, his development has been a major bright spot.
The Mets are now 6.5 games back in the National League wild card race.
The Mets and Diamondbacks will finish out their series on Thursday at Chase Field. First pitch is scheduled for 9:40 p.m. ET as Carlos Carrasco (2-3, 5.94 ERA) takes the ball for the Mets and Ryne Nelson (5-4, 4.67) gets it for the Diamondbacks.
After this series, the Mets will finish out the first half of the season on the road against the San Diego Padres.
