New York Yankees' Cy Young Candidate Gerrit Cole Continues to Lead Baseball in This Impressive Category
The New York Yankees scored four runs in the ninth inning on Friday night to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-5 at PNC Park.
The win moves the Yankees to 75-73 on the season and propels them past the Boston Red Sox for fourth place in the American League East.
While the late offense was the main story of the Yankees' victory, the work of starting pitcher Gerrit Cole should not be overlooked.
The Cy Young candidate in the American League registered a no-decision after going 5.0 innings. He surrendered two runs on six hits and struck out four.
Per Katie Sharp of @Stathead, Cole continues to strengthen his resume by leading baseball in his category:
Gerrit Cole has 24 starts with 2 runs or fewer allowed this season. That's the most in MLB.
Cole is 13-4 this year with a 2.81 ERA. He's stuck out 208 batters in 192.0 innings. He's in his 11th year in the big leagues with the Pirates, Astros and Yankees. He was the former No. 1 overall draft pick of the Pirates and pitched for them from 2013-2017.
The 33-year-old is a six-time All-Star who started the All-Star Game this year for the American League.
The Yankees and Pirates will play each other again on Saturday night. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. ET. Neither team has announced a starting pitcher as of this posting.
The Pirates will enter play at 69-79. They are in fourth place in the National League Central, 3.5 games ahead of the St. Louis Cardinals for that position.
