The New York Yankees have made the decision to designate struggling outfielder Aaron Hicks for assignment.

The team will promote the recently-acquired Greg Allen up to the major league team. They acquired him from the Boston Red Sox on Friday.

The decision to designate Hicks is one that makes a lot of Yankees fans happy, but comes with significant financial repercussions for the team.

The team signed him to a seven-year, $70 million contract before the 2020 season and will have to eat significant money as a result of this designation.

He's still owed the rest of his more than $10 million salary for this year, plus more than $9 million a year for each 2024 and 2025. He's also owed $1 million on a buyout for 2026.

The Yankees have seven days to trade Hicks, outright him to the minors or put him on waivers. If a team were to claim him, they'd be on the hook for all the money owed, so that seems highly unlikely.

Hicks is out to a terrible start at the plate this year, continuing a series of subpar runs for the Yankees. He's hitting just .188 this year with one home run. He hit just .216 a season ago.

He's also dealt with injury issues as well since getting to New York. He played just 59 games in 2019 and 32 in 2021, further adding to Yankees fans frustrations.

He made his major league debut in 2013 with the Minnesota Twins.

The Yankees will play the Cincinnati Reds Saturday at 4:10 p.m. ET.
