New York Yankees Haven't Engaged in Contract Conversations with All-Star 2B
The New York Yankees haven't engaged in contract extension conversations with All-Star second baseman Gleyber Torres, according to general manager Brian Cashman.
From Bryan Hoch of MLB.com on social media:
Brian Cashman said that the Yankees have not had any extension talks with Gleyber Torres, noting that he is their second baseman “for this season.”
Torres, acquired in the 2016 trade with the Chicago Cubs for Aroldis Chapman, is in the final year of his rookie deal.
The 27-year-old made his major league debut in 2018 with the Yankees and made the All-Star team in both 2018 and 2019.
In six years with New York, he's a .267 hitter who also owns a .334 on-base percentage. He hit a career-high 38 homers back in 2019 and also drove in 90 runs that year.
Torres is coming off a bounceback season in 2023, one that saw him hit .273 with 25 home runs. He is joined in the Yankees' infield by Anthony Rizzo, Anthony Volpe and whoever officially wins the third base job.
The Yankees will enter the 2024 season with great expectations so having another good year from Torres will go a long way towards helping realize those expectations.
The team finished fourth in the American League East last season and missed the playoffs entirely. This offseason, they've brought in starting pitcher Marcus Stroman and traded for outfielders Juan Soto, Trent Grisham and Alex Verdugo.
They should also get Jasson Dominguez back from injury at some point during the mid-summer.
