The New York Yankees have hired Brad Ausmus as their next bench coach, New York Post baseball columnist Joel Sherman reported Tuesday.

New York was looking to replace Carlos Mendoza, who spent the past four seasons as the club's bench coach. The New York Mets poached Mendoza to hire him as their manager earlier in November, however, leaving an opening on the Yankees' staff.

The Yankees initially drafted Ausmus back in 1987, selecting the Dartmouth product in the 48th round that year. Ausmus was ultimately traded to the San Diego Padres, with whom he began his MLB career in 1993.

Ausmus also spent time with the Detroit Tigers, Houston Astros and Los Angeles Dodgers before retiring in 2010. The catcher finished his career with 1,579 hits, 80 home runs, 607 RBI, a 16.5 WAR, three Gold Gloves and an All-Star appearance.

After three seasons in the Padres' front office, Ausmus returned to Detroit to become the Tigers' manager in 2014. Ausmus led the Tigers to an AL Central title in 2014, but the club eventually let his contract expire after the 2017 season.

Ausmus was named the Los Angeles Angels' manager in 2019. He was fired after leading the team to a 72-90 record in his lone season at the helm.

The Oakland Athletics brought Ausmus on as their bench coach in 2022, which turned out to be another one-year stint. Ausmus was a coach for Team Israel at the World Baseball Classic in 2023.

Ausmus will now be working under manager Aaron Boone in the Bronx, trying to lead the Yankees back to the playoffs after they failed to secure a spot this fall. Ausmus won't be the only new coach, either, as New York introduced James Rowson as its next hitting coach on Nov. 13.
