New York Yankees' Isiah Kiner-Falefa Does Something Not Done in More Than Six Years on Wednesday
New York Yankees speedster Isiah Kiner-Falefa gave the Yankees some insurance over the New York Mets on Wednesday night, stealing home to turn a 2-1 Yankees lead into a 3-1 Yankees lead at Citi Field.
With that steal of home, Sarah Langs of MLB.com reports that IKF is the first Yankee to steal home since Didi Gregorious did it on August 27, 2016.
Kiner-Falefa had previously broken the 1-1 tie and given the Yankees the lead with a fielders choice. The season started out tumultuously for Kiner-Falefa, who was beaten out at shortstop for the starting job by rookie Anthony Volpe. He's turned himself into a useful part of the roster though and started in center field on Wednesday.
He's hitting .238 with three homers, 15 RBI and eight steals at this point.
He's in his second year with the Yankees after spending the previous four with the Texas Rangers.
At the time of this posting, the Yankees still lead the Mets, 3-2, in the bottom of the seventh. In addition to the runs produced by Kiner-Falefa, the Yankees have an RBI single from Jake Bauers. The Mets scored on a double by Tommy Pham.
This game featured a stellar starting pitching matchup where Justin Verlander went six innings and allowed just three hits and one run for the Mets while Gerrit Cole went six innings and allowed just four hits and one run for the Yankees.
Both teams will be off on Thursday before the Yankees open a series with the Red Sox on Friday and the Mets host the Cardinals.
