Oakland Athletics Broadcaster Glen Kuiper Suspended; NLBM President Responds to Incident
Oakland Athletics television broadcaster Glen Kuiper has been suspended following his use of a racial slur during Friday's pregame show before the A's played the Kansas City Royals.
Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle tweeted this on Saturday afternoon:
"According to an NBC Sports California spokesperson, Glen Kuiper has been suspended and will be off the air until a review of Friday’s incident is completed."
Prior to Friday's game, Kuiper was speaking to the audience about what he and broadcaster Dallas Braden did before the game and he mentioned a trip to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, but instead of the word "Negro," he used the slur.
You can watch that unedited comment in this post here. Be aware, the comment is unedited.
Before the sixth inning, Kuiper issued a clumsy apology for the incident and he issued another apology on Saturday.
More from Kawahara:
"A statement from Glen Kuiper, provided through NBC Sports California: 'I could not be more sorry and horrified by what I said. I hope you will accept my sincerest apologies."
Also on Saturday, Negro Leagues Baseball Museum President Bob Kendrick issued a comment on the situation:
"I'm aware of the unfortunate slur made by Glen Kuiper. I welcomed Glen to the NLBM yesterday and know he was genuinely excited to be here. The word is painful and has no place in our society. And while I don't pretend to know Glen's heart, I do know that my heart is one of forgiveness. I hope all of you will find it in yourselves to do the same."
We will have more on this story once the television station completes its investigation.
