Oakland Athletics Ink Veteran Reliever Scott Alexander to Major League Contract
The Oakland Athletics have signed left-handed pitcher Scott Alexander, MLB Trade Rumors' Steve Adams reported Wednesday morning.
MLB.com's Martín Gallegos reported earlier Wednesday that Alexander had a locker set up inside the A's clubhouse at their Spring Training complex in Mesa, Arizona. Per Adams, Alexander's contract is a major league deal, although the exact terms have yet to be revealed.
Alexander, 34, spent the last two seasons with the San Francisco Giants. He finished 2023 with a 7-3 record, 4.66 ERA, 1.366 WHIP and -0.2 WAR in 55 appearances.
Entering last season, however, Alexander was 12-9 with a 3.00 ERA, 1.291 WHIP and 4.6 WAR for his career.
Alexander got his start with the Kansas City Royals in 2015, bursting onto the scene with 58 appearances in 2017. After getting traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers, Alexander pitched in 73 games in 2018.
A handful of injuries limited Alexander to 59 outings from 2019 to 2021, but he still put up a 3.20 ERA in that span.
Alexander became a free agent in 2022, settling for a minor league deal with the Giants. He eventually earned a call-up to the big leagues, posting a 1.04 ERA and 0.750 WHIP in 17 MLB games.
Alexander's second season with the Giants didn't go quite as well, as his ERA was the highest of his career. Most of his struggles came as an opener, with his ERA reaching 8.10 and his WHIP reaching 1.650 across his eight starts.
Oakland likely won't need to utilize Alexander as a starter, considering they signed Alex Wood and traded for Ross Stripling, both of whom also came over from the Giants. The Athletics also acquired relievers Trevor Gott and Mitch Spence in December, while veteran lefty Sean Newcomb arrived via trade in August.
