OPINION: New York Yankees Are a Joke For Promoting 100-Year Yankee Stadium Anniversary

The New York Yankees celebrated April 18th as the 100th anniversary of Yankee Stadium. There's only one problem, this current Yankee Stadium opened in 2009. Just because a stadium has used the same name for 100 years, doesn't make it the same stadium, and therefore, doesn't make it worth celebrating. It's false advertising and its best and a petty attempt to generate buzz.

The New York Yankees don't need publicity stunts. At least they shouldn't.

The Yankees, with their 27 World Series titles, the Cooperstown immortality and the row of retired numbers, shouldn't need publicity stunts.

Publicity stunts are reserved for the down-trodden franchises. If the Oakland A's did it, I'd get it. The Cleveland Browns, the Charlotte Hornets, the Arizona Coyotes, fine, but not the Yankees.

But apparently, that's exactly what the Yankees are now doing.

The Yankees celebrated on April 18th the "100th anniversary of Yankee Stadium" opening.

The team's official Twitter account posted a graphic of the stadium with a digital banner on it.

The account also put out another tweet signifying the accomplishment from the "Yankees Magazine" account. "Just the name "Yankee Stadium" evokes thoughts of grandeur. When it opened 100 years ago today, it didn't take long for the first truly great moment to occur."

There's only one problem with all of this: This Yankee Stadium hasn't been opened for 100 years. This Yankee Stadium opened in 2009. It replaced a previous Yankee Stadium that was opened from 1923-2008. That's a fantastic 80+ year run, but it isn't 100 years. That stadium was used for 85 years and this one has been used for 15.

Just because you call a stadium Yankee Stadium does mean you get all of the old stadium's history.

That's false advertising at best and a weak attempt to create a buzz at worst. It's dishonest and annoying, and I'd expect better from the Yankees.
