In another step forward for women in baseball, the Pittsburgh Pirates are hiring Sarah Gelles as their Assistant General Manager.

Eno Sarris of 'The Athletic' had the information on "X," formerly known as Twitter:

Well there goes number one on the list: sources tell @Britt_Ghiroli and I that Sarah Gelles is headed to the Pirates to be an Assistant General Manager. She started her career with an internship there before rising through the ranks in Baltimore and Houston.

Sarris had recently written a story in the publication about potential future stars in management or coaching, and Gelles was on the list.

Here was the Gelles' portion of that article:

From an internship with the Pirates through the Orioles’ R&D team and to the top of the Astros analytics department, Gelles has accrued admirers in many different sectors. The Astros during her time have solidified their reputation as the standard for player development and the implementation of proprietary research up and down the food chain. She received the most votes from our pool, and those came from rival executives, analysts who have worked with her, and independent contractors who saw the value in her work.

“Just an amazing ability to oversee dozens of projects and not ever give the appearance that her attention is divided,” thought one analyst. “She cares a lot about the well-being of her people.”

Gelles will work alongside Pirates' general manager Ben Cherington, who is overseeing the rebuild of the organization.

Pittsburgh finished fourth in the National League Central in 2023 but does have reasons for optimism: The team drafted Paul Skenes of LSU with the No. 1 overall draft pick and also will get a full season of health out of Oneil Cruz in 2024.
