San Francisco Giants Designate Banged Up Outfielder Luis González For Assignment

The San Francisco Giants have designated outfielder Luis González for assignment, according to a report from The Athletic's Andrew Baggarly on Monday.
González was activated from the 60-day injured list on Aug. 7, leading San Francisco to lose infielder Isan Díaz to the Detroit Tigers on waivers. The Giants immediately optioned González to Triple-A Sacramento.
After spending most of the 2022 season as a regular contributor for the Giants – appearing in 98 games and starting 89 – González was banged up for the first two-thirds of the 2023 campaign. González underwent surgery to repair a herniated disc in his lower back in late March.
González started a rehab assignment in Rookie Ball on July 20 before advancing to Triple-A Sacramento on July 25.
The outfielder was not long for San Francisco, though, as he got boxed out of his 40-man roster spot a few weeks later. The Giants are calling up outfield prospect Wade Meckler, according to a report from ESPN's Jeff Passan, which forced their hand in designating González for assignment.
González, a former Chicago White Sox third round pick, is a career .253 hitter with four home runs, 36 RBI, 19 doubles, 10 stolen bases and a .690 OPS in 107 MLB appearances.
Across 388 minor league games, meanwhile, González has hit .265 with 38 home runs, 182 RBI, 80 doubles, 47 stolen bases, a .763 OPS and a 0.3 WAR. González has played 18 minor league games so far in 2023, batting .222 with a .639 OPS.
